When Was Jesus Born
RC Sproul wrote these words; That question comes up every year at Christmastime. In the first place, there’s no direct biblical commandment to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25. There’s nothing in the Bible that would even indicate that Jesus was born on December 25. In fact, there’s much in the New Testament narratives that would indicate that it didn’t occur during that time of year. It just so happens that on the twenty-fifth of December in the Roman Empire there was a pagan holiday that was linked to mystery religions; the pagans celebrated their festival on December 25. The Christians didn’t want to participate in that, and so they said, “While everybody else is celebrating this pagan thing, we’re going to have our own celebration. We’re going to celebrate the thing that’s most important in our lives, the incarnation of God, the birth of Jesus Christ. So this is going to be a time of joyous festivities, of celebration and worship of our God and King.”
I can’t think of anything more pleasing to Christ than the church celebrating his birthday every year. Keep in mind that the whole principle of annual festival and celebration is deeply rooted in ancient Jewish tradition. In the Old Testament, for example, there were times when God emphatically commanded the people to remember certain events with annual celebrations. While the New Testament doesn’t require that we celebrate Christmas every year, I certainly see nothing wrong with the church’s entering into this joyous time of celebrating the Incarnation, which is the dividing point of all human history. Originally, it was intended to honor, not Mithras or any of the other mystery religion cults, but the birth of our King.
Someone I knew did the math came up with date was in middle of September until middle of October known as the month of Tishri when Jesus was born. While other person thought it was in the third known as the month March or April. They both think their right, and believe they can support their claim in scriptures. So lets examine the scripture. The only account that gives a detail account is Luke 1; 8- 10. Now, it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, 9 according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering. Note that He does not say that He enter the Holy of Holy. However, it he does says that he entered the temple of the Lord, to burn incense only priest in line Aaron performed this tasks nor does say when He enter the temple when performed this task.
To understand the important of burning incense you need to read Exodus 29- 30 understand the duty of priest; in chapter 30 verses 7- 8; 7 Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when he trims the lamps. 8 When Aaron trims the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense. There shall be perpetual incense before the Lord throughout your generations .
Matthew Hendry Commentary wrote; Now the father of John Baptist was a priest, a son of Aaron; his name Zacharias. No families in the world were ever so honoured of God as those of Aaron and David with one was made the covenant of priesthood, with the other that of royalty.
Aaron in John Baptist, on that of David in Christ, and then they were both extinguished and lost. Christ was of David’s house, his forerunner of Aaron’s.
Even thou Zacharia and Elisabeth were not sinless, yet they were blameless; nobody could charge them with any open scandalous sin; they lived honestly and inoffensively.
This was not the high priest burning incense on the day of atonement, as some have fondly imagined, who have thought by that to find out the time of our Saviour’s birth; but it is plain that it was the burning of the daily incense at the altar of incense (v. Luke 1;11 (And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.), which was in the temple.
This was not the high priest burning incense on the day of atonement, as some have fondly imagined, who have thought by that to find out the time of our Saviour’s birth; but it is plain that it was the burning of the daily incense at the altar of incense (v. 11), which was in the temple (v. 9), not in the most holy place, into which the high priest entered. The Jews say that one and the same priest burned not incense twice in all his days (there were such a multitude of them), at least never more than one week. It is very probable that this was upon the sabbath day, because there was a multitude of people attending (v. 10), which ordinarily was not on a week day; and thus God usually puts honour upon his own day.
It is very probable that this was upon the sabbath day, because there was a multitude of people attending (v. 10), which ordinarily was not on a week day; and thus God usually puts honour upon his own day And then if Dr. Lightfoot reckon, with the help of the Jewish cal ender, that this course of Abia fell on the seventeenth day of the third month, the month Sivan, answering to part of May and part of June, it is worth observing that the portions of the law and the prophets which were read this day in synagogues were very agreeable to that which was doing in the temple; namely, the law of the Nazarites.
Even thou Mathew Henry makes a compelling defense and like his reasoning; however, scripture really does not say which Sabbath He burn the incense.
Believer Commentary wrote, Each shift was called on to serve at the temple in Jerusalem twice a year from Sabbath to Sabbath. There were so many priests at this time that the privilege of burning incense in the Holy Place came only once in a lifetime, if at all.
Dr. John Parsons wrote this about Jesus birth He believed Jesus was born between September and October supporting your argument. Here is his website: http://www.hebrew4christians.com/Articles/Christmas/christmas.htm.
My Mother once told me. The reason Moses or Jesus burial site were not revealed in the scripture because we would’ve built a shrine around these sites and been focus on these sites instead the task at hand, the gospel. Maybe the reason the four gospel did not reveal the date of Jesus birth is perhaps they were more focus on why he came, and accuracy of whether he was the real Messiah or not. As Scripture states, “ The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.”
The Old Testament support Jesus as the Messiah to Jews and the Gentles. Jesus said these words once,” “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Jesus said,” I have glorified You on the earth by completing the work You gave Me to do.”
The reason why He came into this world is to redeemed mankind from their sins. For Jesus, to be our sinless savour He needed to fulfill the Law and the Prophets. In which He did. He sacrifice himself on the cross for humankind sins. He willing took our sins and His Father wrath as the same time. To bridge the gap mankind and His Father.
Believer Commentary wrote, “One-third of all the people who have ever lived are living today. By the year 2000, one-half of all the people who have ever lived will be living then. As the population explodes, the task increases. But the method is always the same—devoted disciples with unlimited love for Christ who count no sacrifice too great for Him.”
