John MacAuthor
John Fullerton MacArthur, Jr. was born on June 19, 1939, in Los Angeles, and came from a long line of pastor a fifth-generation Pastor. Reared up by Godly parents who displayed a consistent love of Christ, and they were a wonderful model to him. Although he never rebelled against God; however, there was an incident when I was about nine or ten. I had gotten involved in some vandalism because some kids had kind of prompted him to do it. He felt terrible about it and was frightened by it and uttered these words to dad, “I’m not a good boy and I need the Lord to forgive me.” His dad prayed for him that the Lord would save him. According to John , he always believed in Jesus atoning work never able to point a time or place where accepted the Lord.
While he was averaged student while attending school, somewhat daring often he would speak out of turn and had curious nature as well his parent would spank him regularly. However his parents, felt he would excel as a theologian or pastor. According to John, he felt deep down this was his calling in life to teaches the gospel. Even though resisted at first, and did not attend Christian College recommend by his father.
He excelled in sports such as football-baseball-basketball and track and was a sprinter. He went to Pacific College in order to participate in athletics because they would take all my credits. The Washington Red Skins sought after him. He also received a phone call from the Cleveland Browns to replace hall framer wide receiver named Paul Warfield when he broke his collarbone.
While driving home with six his friends in little two-door Ford Fairlane car down a highway in Alabama. The car lost control flip over, and the door opened kept it from rolling, nonetheless it keeps moving went about a hundred twenty-five or thirty yards while John on his back. In the state of complete shock, but conscious. Even thou there was no broken bones, and he able to walk. He had third-degree burn on his back, and went to in the hospital for three months wrapped up like mummy in agonizing pain. God got his attendant.
Even thou he continued to play football at Pacific College, and was the player of the week. Yet, he uses It as platform to preach the gospel. Where he spoke with a quadriplegic who shot by his boyfriend. She accepted the Lord and married a Christian. He began to realize his calling was preached and teaches the gospel.
He told his coach he giving up football, and pursuing his true calling, and enrolled into Talbot Theological Seminary, and excelled in theology while under the wing of Charles Feinberg. A biblical scholar a man who was passionate about the authority of Scripture, and passionate about declaring the Word of God. John not only wanted to understand the scriptures but displayed it passionately.
One the first lesson John Dr. Feinberg was accuracy Biblical teaching of scriptures. He asks to preached on a certain text, and frankly butchered it. According to John next to his father Dr. Feinberg he admire most. it important John to get text right like mentor no half measure. While his mentor lower his ears he value his rebuke, and took it to heart if mentor felt it was important to get right than it was important as well. To this day every time he prepare sermon his mentor would be on shoulder remind him to get the text right.
Another valuable lesson John learned is always finished assignment no matter how small the task is for example in interview with colleague Phil Johnson he stated these words,” Well, when I graduated, I disappointed him again because he told me I had won some award for exposition for my seminary career, you know, my grades and the classes in exposition. And he called me in to thank me and all this. And then, I didn’t turn a paper in because, you know, you get to your last courses, and your last deal and it was a final little paper and my grades were good enough, I was going to graduate. And Dr. Thomas whacked me down a grade. and he didn’t know that was going to happen to me. And so the next day he found out that I had not won the award because I didn’t turn in this little paper. And he called me in and gave me another lesson about no matter how far you go, you haven’t gone all the way until you’ve finished. And great lessons. I mean, he just said that’s not tolerable. That is not acceptable. “
Another person who gave John yet another insight was Ralph Kuyper a secretary of Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse who totally blind only able see 10% out one eye. To use another scripture back another scripture explaining texts.
In 1969 Grace To You hired John, and his first sermon was preached on February 09 1969 on Matthew 7; 21- 23; Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’Then I will announce to them; ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers! Not most comfortable text to preached on his first sermon. Where some of the members were involved in adultery while some were promenade members GTY did not know the Lord, and accepted Him as Savour.
Some of elderly and the sick who unable to attend church where started a tape ministry and in it was such demand. They hire a person full time named Rick Draa record the messages. In 1977 some tapes, accidentally found there way on Baltimore radio station. Forming 1/2 hour throughout Canada and USA where millions of people benefits from to this day benefit from John teaching. He also wrote 17 books, plus 33 volume cometary on The New Testament.
