The Holy Spirit In Creation Creation

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Genesis 1; 1- 2

The Holy Spirit is the third person of triune God, the Father the Son, and Holy Spirit they’re distinct and they’ve differently in personalities and responsibilities, yet, they’re one. Calvin Institutes states, Father, Son, and Spirit, are one God, and yet that the Son is not the Father, nor the Spirit the Son, but that each has his peculiar subsistence. (Books 1 chapter 13 section 5)  The Holy Spirit is God “Prove both that he is God, and that he has a separate subsistence from the Father (Book 1 (chapter 12 section 2)    The Hebrew word Elohim means God one many names of God. The El suggest power or strength. Eloh is Hebrew for God, mi is a plural foam Elohim also means  in Hebrew several gods; however, here it uses in a singular foam. Hence, the three in one God and it used in singular foam 2,600 times throughout the Old Testament. As Calvin decares, “While he proclaims his unity, he distinctly sets it before us as existing in three persons.”  Book 1 chapter 13 section 2 The Holy Spirit was seriously involved creation in and played a vital role in it as RA Torry states, “ Here are many who think of the work of the Holy Spirit as limited to man. But, God reveals to us in His Word that the Holy Spirit’s work has a far wider scope than this.” The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit; Chapter 6 The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Material Universe section. His role is threefold. First, physical matter in the cosmos, second maintains the universe, lastly forming chaotic and undeveloped cosmos into structure order.

First; In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and it was without foam or void, He spoke and physical matter and it came into existence and it was created not easier Hebrew meaning frame or foam. All matter was created by God and was able produce it own kind and continue to produce. The Hebrew bara means to created, suggested God created nothing into something. The cosmos has a beginning and isn’t eternal; hence, the important of the word created (bara} in the Genesis account. While humans being are  very creative in manufacturing goods and innovative inventions, but they unable self creates.  Its only God that has the capability and the power to created a complex system quickly and efficiently.  For example, a computer is unable creates another computer. However, a tree and produces can turn out it own kind,  as scripture declares. Then, God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” 11And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. Genesis 1; 11- 12. Another scripture states, While the earth remains,  Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer, and winter, And day, and night  Shall not cease.” Genesis 8; 21b – 22 The Holy Spirit was activated in creation; for example, between Genesis 1; 3-25 And God said was written  fifteen times, And God said eight times, And God called three times, And God made three times. Between verses 21 – 27  And God created was said, once made and three times. While there’s many theories that try to disprove creation story. Nonetheless  God doesn’t try to prove that He exists it our responsibilities disprove it. The genesis account gives God account in how create all things and assumes He assumes  that mankind would take this fact for granted as it stated the Bible Ps. 14; 1 The fools say there’s no God. All ancient religious books, religious systems, and modern philosophies begin, with no God. It’s the Genesis account  record that God created all matter, and the Holy Spirit was part creation. Since the Holy Spirit  was part of creation, the evident is in the creation it self is very cut-and-dried. As Calvin says, “ for it shows not only that the beauty which the world displays is maintained by the invigorating power of the Spirit, Calvin institutes) Book 1 chapter 13 section 13) “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath (Spirit) of his mouth,” (Ps. 33:6), The beauty in nature the endless resources such as food, clothing, and shelter, the magnificent power in the distant solar system and distant  galaxies in their splendor and energy shinning brightness in the night often a guidance for the lost. The sun that gives warm and light to mankind during the day. The wind while invisible to the naked eye is both has a gentle breeze and produces terrifying storm. The  visible and invisible matter within the universe and all creation is a testament  to God befitting to a king and his glory and splendour. As Calvin states “ Creation exhibit so many bright lamps lighted up to show forth the glory of its Author.” Calvin Institutes  Book 1 chapter 5 section 14) further declares “ but so to manifest his perfections in the whole structure of the universe, and daily place himself in our view, that we cannot open our eyes without being compelled to behold him. Wherever you turn your eyes, there is no portion of the world; however, minute, which does not exhibit at least some sparks of beauty in creation. (Book 1 chapter 5 section 1). Matthew Henry states from Isaiah 40; 12 -13 “1. He has a vast reach. View the celestial globe, and you are astonished at the extent of it; but the great God metes the heavens with a span; to him they are but a hand-breadth, so large-handed is he. View the terraqueous globe, and he has the command of that too. All the waters in the world he can measure in the hollow of his hand, where we can hold but a little water; and the dry land he easily manages, for he comprehends the dust of the earth in a measure, or with his three fingers; it is no more to him than a pupil, or that which we take up between our thumb and two fingers.” II. His wisdom is unsearchable, and what no creature can give either information or direction to, v. 13, 14. As none can do what God has done and does, so none can assist him in the doing of it or suggest any thing to him which he thought not of. When the Lord by his Spirit made the world (Job 26:13) there was none that directed his Spirit, or gave him any advice, either what to do or how to do it? Nor does he need any counselor to direct him in the government of the world,” Matthew Henry Commentaries on Isaiah 40; 12-13 point 1 – 2 The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit created the heavens the earth in It grandeur and elegance for us to enjoy by God so we can esteem, praise, worship and enjoy Him forever.

Secondly, One the roles the Holy Spirit play in creation is  that he breathes into all substance and germinates life preserves it and maintain and control all creation. Scripture says,  By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,  And by the breath of His mouth all their host. [Psalms 33; 6 NSB] Another verse states  “By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent. Job 26; 13 NASB Yet another verse in the Bible states, God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 22; “While the earth remains,  Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer, and winter, And day, and night  Shall not cease.” Genesis 8; 21b – 22 NASB) Calvin declares, “After learning that there is a Creator, it must forthwith infer that he is also a Governor and Preserver, and that, not by producing a kind of general motion in the machine of the globe as well as in each of its parts, but by a special providence sustaining, cherishing, superintending, all the things which he has made, to the very minutest, even to a sparrow. Calvin institutes Book 1 Chapter 16 Section 1.  The, forests, water, and fields are able to self procreate. As Lewis S. Johnson declares,” and so, the Spirit of God is ready to energize this mass and give it all the qualities that it has (such as gravity; for example) in part of his work of giving life to that which God has brought into existence. The Spirit of God is the force of life. (Creation of the World” by S. Lewis Johnson). Calvin also states 1. It were cold and lifeless to represent God as a momentary Creator, which completed his work once for all, and then left it. Here, especially, we must dissent from the profane, and maintain that the presence of the divine power is conspicuous, not less in the perpetual condition of the world then in its first creation. Calvin Institutes Book Chapter 16 section 1 Without  the Holy Spirit all matter would turn to dust as declare by the Bible, You take away their spirit, they expire and return to their dust.   (Psalms 104 29b NASB)  However, does not mean the Universe is God as R A Torry attests “ This does not mean for a moment that the universe is God, but it does mean that the universe is maintained in its being by the immanence of God in it. This is the great and solemn truth that lies at the foundation of the awful and debasing perversions of Pantheism in its countless forms”  The person and  the Work of the Holly Spirit Chapter 6 The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Material Universe Section 2. Breathe, Spirit or Wind, the Hebrew word is Ruach, it occurs 378 in Authorization Version   translates as “Spirit or spirit” 232 times, “wind” 92 times, “breath” 27 times. The Holman Bible Dictionary define, “Ruach refers more to the psychological idea of breath by relating it to one’s own will or purpose. This is in keeping with its primary meaning of spirit, which either refers to the inner force of a person or the essential nature of God.”  Calvin Institutes declare, “ the Scriptures ascribe to him, and which the pious actually feel him discharging, —his being diffused over all space, sustaining, invigorating, and quickening all things, both in heaven and on the earth. The mere fact of his not being circumscribed by any limits raises him above the rank of creatures, while his transfusing vigor into all things, breathing into them being, life, and motion, is plainly divine.”  John Calvin Institutes Book 1 Chapter 13 Sections 14  Ruach describes the more intensified aspects of breath. It refers to God providing human life in the same manner as neshamah (Genesis 6:17). By breathing out speech, He created the heavens (Psalms 33:6). His breath also sustains life (Job 12:10; Psalms 104:29). By His breath He even rearearestores life (Ezekiel 37:5-10). Repeatedly in Ezekiel 37:5-10 the term ruach occurs in word plays on its meanings as breaths wind, and spirit. It is used to affirm the possibility of giving life to the dry bones.” The Holy Spirit continues gives life and growth to all vegetations, plants bearing seeds, trees bearing fruit with seeds in them. Producing teem of water so that all agricultural can grow. He governs the expansion in the sky producing heat and lights during the day so agricultural in the environment can grow. As  scripture states Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food  (Genesis 2; 9 b NASB)  Further declares, By the river on its bank, on one side, and on the other, will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail.  (Ezekiel 47 12 b NASB)   The moon glow at night and the stars twinkle giving light at nighttime. And God saw that everything created was very good and the Spirit keep it palm of his hand as scripture declares.  “To Him who made the great lights, For His loving kindness is everlasting: The sun to rule   by day, For His lovingkindness is everlasting,  The moon and stars to rule ] by night, For His lovingkindness is everlasting”. (Psalm 136  7- 9 N AS B)  further states “see Thy heavens, a work of Thy fingers, Moon and stars that Thou didst establish.  (Psalms  8 ; 3) YLT) Elsewhere it says “35 Thus says the LORD, Which gives the sun for light by day And the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night” (Jeremiah 31; 35 a)  Calvin states “ for it shows not only that   the beauties which the world displays are maintained by the invigorating power of the Spirit, (Calvin Institutes book 1 Chapter 13 section 14) While there’s no mention of the Holy Spirit in the creation account. Nonetheless, there isn’t  reference to the triune God throughout the Bible, and God is not  mention  in Easter as well; however, the Holy Spirit finger is involved creation and has the same attribute The Father  and the Son, Institute Christian Living declares, “ In short, all the peculiar attributes of the Godhead are ascribed to him in the same way as to the Son. He searches for the deep things of Gods and has no counselor among the creatures.” Calvins Institutes book 1 chapter 13 Sections 14  Grapham A. Coles quote, “ When I face the door to my apartment I cannot see the hinges that enable the door to work. But, experience tells me that they are there. I have to pass through the door before and have actually seen two large hinges.  But, I cannot see the Holy Spirit. Revelation tells me of the Spirit’s role in creation and its preservation or continuance. But, I can’t see the Spirit workings. I can’t pass through that and, looking back, see the hinges of divine connection. So there is a certain epistemic modesty that should attend our speculations about the causal joint between the Sprit’s workings, and nature owns.”  He Who Gives Life Graham A Cole page 113

Lastly, While creation had a beginning, God always existed. Since the Holy Spirit is God He no beginning nor end. Before God creates the heavens and the earth, it was  without foam, and chaos When the heavens and the earth were created there was order and foam. While there’s many theories in how the creation was foam and created and being discusses among scientific, nonetheless only triune God and possibly angels witness the true creation account and its record in Genesis account as scripture says, “  Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you have understood. Job 38; 4  or Believer Bible Commentaries states; “ Instead He ranges through the universe to give glimpses of His majesty, glory, wisdom, and power. He is saying, in effect, “Before you take it on yourself to criticize My ways, you should ask for yourself if you could manage the creation as well as I do.” This, of course, can only show Job how powerless, ignorant, insignificant, inadequate, incompetent, and finite” Believer Commentary on Job 38; 1 further states in commentary, “ Some might proudly say that, thanks to modern science, we know the answers to many questions that God asks. In response to that, Baron Alexander Humbold acknowledged that what Job could not answer, the men of science cannot answer yet. It is overwhelming to them; because although men of science are very clever about secondary causes, they are always stopped by primary causes. They never can arrive at the great cause, and they do not want the great cause.”  Believer Bible Commentaries

While I do not fully understand the creation account nor understand the role the Holy Spirit plays in creation and has many questions concerning matter, but, I believe in Genesis account than all the theories the  Evolutionist present. While I am not scientific nor qualify to give them proper defense; however, I do faith in God. The  creationist and Evolutionist have one thing common they need faith to believe in their teaching as scripture says, “ By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible.” Hebrews 11; 3  Calvin states, “yet faith has a method of its own in assigning the whole praise of creation to God. Calvin Institutes Book 1 chapter 16 section 1

I have more faith in God’s Word than the Evolutionist theories any day of the week.

A Hymn that was sung at my mother funeral How Great Thou Art; written by Swedish poet Carl Boberg, 1859 – 1,940  and translated into by Stuart K. Hine, 1,899 – 1,989 fits with God’s creation.

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God,

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all

The world Thy Hand hath made,

I see the stars,

I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy pow’r throughout

The universe displayed;

Stanza 2:

When through the woods

And forest glades I wander

I hear the birds

Sing sweetly in the trees;

When I look down

From lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook
