In Memory Of Persecuted The Saints Part Eleven The American Quakers

Give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

In middle of the seventeenth century, some Quakers fled to America from persecution While others came as missionary their beliefs to the British colonists. However, they suffered the same fate as they did in England. They were levied heavily fine if they continue in their beliefs. If they didn’t pay the fine they went to prison.   Numbers were not only cruelly beaten and whipped in a public manner, like criminals, but some were branded and others had their ears cut off. Great numbers were long confined in loathsome prison. Some were not allow access into the country.

Some were banished on pain of death; and four were actually executed by the hands of the hangman, as we shall hear relate, after inserting copies of some of the laws of the country where they suffered. If any person shall knowingly import any they would be subject to fines or imprisonment.

While having treacherous and outrageous religious doctrine such as, obedience to the command of Christ, loves your enemies, refusing levy Jewish ceremonies, using scriptural language, thou, and “thee, and uncovering their heads, or pulling off their hats, by way of homage to man.

Two were executed were William Robinson and Marmaduke Stevenson. While William Roberson was looked upon as a teacher was condemned to be whipped. On October 27,1659. Robinson and Stephenson were hung from a tree.. Prior to the executing they tenderly hug each other, and each cheerfully climbed the gallows-ladder while praising the Lord. While Mary Dyer life was spared. She demanded to be hanged like her brethren, but was not executed. Dyar was banished once again, and was eventually, hanged in 1,660 for returning to the colony.

John Foxe penned these words concerning the Quakers, “These Friends are, in the present age, a very harmless, inoffensive body of people; but of that we shall take more notice hereafter. By their wise regulations, they not only do honour to themselves, but they are of vast service to the community. However, image if those who died in prison holding strongly to their principals without the knowledge Christ atoning work. They would be worst off because they eternally damn, and living eternal without Christ. As scripture declares, “Give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Jesus declared, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name? And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. That include all religion no religious sect has a right to force their religious beliefs on others.

Only God has authority to judge right or wrong. Since He declared that all mankind are sinners, and the only way you can gain access into His kingdom is through His Son Jesus Christ, and believed He died on Calgary Cross took mankind sins, and replace with His righteousness.

Anselm uttered these words “Lord Jesus Christ, the good shepard who condescended to die for your flock acknowledged me among your sheep, and led me to your pasture. You who drink the bitter from me enable me to share in your glory. Your punishments torture my conscience, and your torments my memory. For I feared to drink the potion you drank. The sins you bore were my sins. I, an obstinate slave, committed the crimes for which you were flogged. It was my debts that were paid by you. My iniquity was the cause of your death, and my misdeeds brought about your wounds. Alas, for my sins for which atonement had to be made by so bitter a death. Oh unspeakable mercy that when satisfaction for guilt was owed by none but man and none but God was able to provide it, he showed his mercy by becoming man, and though he owed nothing for himself paid our debt by dying for us. Behold how God did not spare his own son, but delivered him up for us.

Campbell Morgan once said, “Men who theorize about the atonement and quarrel over the forms in which they express the truth, and never stretch out the hand to save the lost souls. These are the men who are cursing the church.

Dr Lewis Johnson wrote, “There is no salvation in baptism. There is no salvation in the Lord’s supper.  There is no salvation in education.  There is no salvation in culture.  There is surely no salvation in citizenship.  Salvation finds it source n the blood that was shed on Calvary’s cross, and the atoning work that our Lord accomplished, but this saving work is for all who believe Further he wrote,” We couldn’t inherit anything, were our sins not paid for, and so in this case it’s on the ground of the slaughter, the sacrificial slaughter of the lamb that we shall inherit the kingdom of God.”

Anselm, “Do you confess that your life has been so evil that you deserve eternal punishment?” And the answer comes: “I confess it.” “Do you repent of this?” “I repent.” “Do you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you?” “I believe it.” “Are you thankful to him?” “I am.” “Do you believe that you cannot be saved except through that death?” “I do believe this.” “Then do this while the soul remains in you. Place your whole trust in this death alone, and have no trust in any other thing. Commit yourself wholly to this death. Cover yourself wholly with it alone. Say, Lord, I plead the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between you and my sins. If he should say to you, It’s because you deserve condemnation. Say, Lord, I place the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between you and my demerits, and I offer his merit in the place of the merit of which I owe and do not have. If he should say that he is angry with you, say,” and just imagine this individual talking to the Lord about these matters and arguing with him. “Lord, I place the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between me and your anger. That’s really in essence what John is writing about. He’s telling us that the lamb, and on the ground of his sacrifice, truly has made it possible for us to enter into the blessings of the kingdom of God. Furthermore, he wrote to a dying man.” Do you confess that your life has been so evil that you deserve eternal punishment?” And the answer comes: “I confess it.” ” Do you repent of this?” “I repent.” ” Do you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you?” “I believe it.” ” Are you thankful to him?” “I am.” “Do you believe that you cannot be saved except through that death?” “I do believe this.” ” Then do this while the soul remains in you. Place your whole trust in this death alone, and have no trust in any other thing. Commit yourself wholly to this death. Cover yourself wholly with it alone.”

Image if will that those who died in prison holding strongly to their principals without the knowledge Christ atoning work. They would be worst off because they eternally damn, and living eternal without Christ. As scripture declares, “ If give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Jesus declared, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.”
