The Five Solas

The Five Solas

The word sola means By oneself; alone. Used as a stage direction to a female character. The meaning in Latin is only single; lonely; alone having no companion/friend/protector;
In the sixteen century people like John Calvin and Martin Luther saw the corruption within the Catholic church and started a movement called the Reformation where they went back teaching Jesus and the apostles. Where they taught that people can be forgiven of theirs sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and receive eternal life with God.
The five sola is Latin five Latin phrases or catchphrase; that summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity.
The Five Solas are:
1. Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority.
2. Sola Fide (“faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
3. Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.
4. Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King.
5. Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): We live for the glory of God alone.

Solas Scriptura

Solas Scriptura is Latin term meaning Scripture alone. The scripture is sixty books and was inspired by the Holy Spirit written by men, and divide into Old Testaments and New Testament. As scripture declares, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, It teaches that Jesus is God, and who became a man further more it declares Old Testament, This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you shall recite q it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.”
It teaches that Jesus is God who became man died on cross took mankind sins and after three days He rose from and descend into heaven and sit right hand of His Father
Apostle Peter wrote And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention has to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
Furthermore, we are forbidden to add to or take away from Scripture Deut. 12:32; Rev. 22:18-19
That being said it does mean that scripture covered everything what Jesus did while here on earth. For example, it does not say date birth of Jesus birth. It only means that everything necessary, as scripture declares,His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. Westminster Confession of Faith wrote, “The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man’s salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men.”
For example, when I accepted Lord prior the Holy Spirit uses the scriptures as means convicting me and leading me to the Lord. The women who lead me to the Lord use the scripture as means to aid me. Later on when started reading the scriptures I able connect the dots. To me scriptures convict and comfort me as the same time. It tells me that I am a sinner yet, it inform me that Jesus is both and God who took my sins and replaces it with His righteousness.

Sola Fide

Sola Fide is a Latin term meaning by faith alone also known as justification by faith alone.
Sola fide Is key point between the Protestants and Catholics, but between biblical Christianity, and almost all other religions and teachings. We’re declared righteous by God by Jesus Christ death on the cross in where He took mankind sins. As scripture declares For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. It’s not base on works by faith. As scriptures declares,” Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus. Furthermore it states, In order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
Biblical Christianity is distinct from every other religion in that it is centered on what God has done through Christ’s finished work, while all other religions are based on human achievement. As scripture declares, Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.  And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness. As scriptures declare,  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; cit is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

How important is sola fide? It is so important to the Gospel message and a biblical understanding of salvation that Martin Luther described it as being “the article with and by which the church stands.” Those who reject sola fide reject the only Gospel that can save them and by necessity embrace a false gospel. As scripture declares, “As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”
Maybe the story Martian Luther would explain Martin fully dedicated himself to monastic life, the effort to do good works to please God and to serve others through prayer for their souls. Yet, peace with God escaped him. He devoted himself to fasts, flagellations, long hours in prayer and pilgrimage, and constant confession. The more he tried to do for God, it seemed, the more aware he became of his sinfulness.
Through the advice of his superior he pursued an academic career get mind of his struggles. The demands of study for academic degrees and preparation for delivering lectures drove Martin Luther to study the Scriptures in depth. Where he found a phrase righteousness of God found in Rom.1:17 meaning you were declared righteous through Christ, not by works and the Catholic Church had lost sight of several central truths.
He no longer felt the heavy burden, and was set free from his sins in which weight him down. With joy, Luther now believed and taught that salvation is a gift of God’s grace, received by faith, and trust in God’s promise to forgive sins for the sake of Christ’s death on the cross.
Martin Luther coin Latin phase the sum up Sola Fida or Justification by faith Simul Justus et Peccator. Meaning simultaneous or at the same time, righteous or justify before God and yet still a sinner Even thou they’re declared righteous through Christ blood you’re still sinner
Heidelberg Catechism Lord Day 23 question sixty God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I had never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me.All I need to do is to accept this gift of God with a believing heart.
John Stott wrote “Who am I? What is myself? The answer is that I am Jekyll and Hyde a mix up kids, having both dignity because I was created had been re-created in the image of God, and depravity because I have fallen and rebellious nature. I am both noble, ignoble beautiful, ugly good, bad, upright, and twisted image and child of God yes sometimes yielding obsequious homage to the devil from whose clutches Christ has rescue me. My true self is what I am by creation which Christ came to redeem, by calling myself what I am I am by the fall, which Christ came destroy.”

Sola Gratia

Sola Gratia is Latin term meaning by grace alone Sola gratia is simply acknowledging that the Bible teaches that the totality of our salvation is a gift of grace from God. As it says in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. It bases on God’s grace and mercy kindness not on mankind goods works.
Most people want to believe that have a role to play in their salvation. They believe they’re masters of our own destiny and captains of our souls. Sadly, it is also foreign to the way the gospel is often presented—as a plea to man to make a decision for Christ” rather than a command to repent and believe. The song Amazing Grace written by John Newton a had phase Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,That saved a wretch like me.I once was lost but now I’m found,
Was blind, but now I see. As scriptures declares, “  But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!”
While it is true that for the Christian, God’s grace empowers us for Christian service (sanctification), the Bible makes it abundantly clear that the works we do play no role whatsoever in our salvation (justification) Romans 4:4,5.

Solus Christus
Solus Christus is Latin term meaning Christ alone;
Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King. That salvation is obtained through the atoning work of Christ alone, apart from individual works, and that Christ is the only mediator between God and man. It holds that salvation cannot be obtained without Christ. Jesus is our king, Revelation 19:16). Our High Priest, Hebrews 4:14, our redeemer, and our Mediator (Galatians 3:13 between God and Man 1 Timothy 2:5
For it’s not good works that save us it’s Christ alone who redeemed and save us from our sins
He {Christ} saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, it states.” This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe
As Luther wrote, “I must listen to the Gospel. It tells me, not what I must do, but what Jesus Christ, the Son of God, has done for me.
Jesus declares these words, Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. Jesus obeyed the perfectly fulfilled. The promises predicted the Old Testament by the prophets. They predicted his birth place what tribes he come from along heirs to throng of David, how going to die and would rise from the grave on third day. In Psalm, twenty-two seventeen prophecies were fulfilled by Christ
Got a question wrote, “Only Christ obeyed the moral and ceremony laws perfectly along with fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies. From beginning to end, the gospel uplifts Christ and Christ alone. He is the One who came from heaven to seek the lost (Luke 19:10). He is the One who obeyed the Law perfectly. He is the One who was crucified, and He is the One who rose again. We are the grateful recipients of His bounty. We are the beggars, and He is the Benefactor. We are the lepers, and He is the Healer. We are turmoil, and He is Peace. Solo Christo. ” In short asks in the person who rebel against God, and than confess theirs sins to Christ. Ask them what happen burdensome sins?
Lee Strobe wrote “And there was plenty of wrongdoing. I’ll spare myself the embarrassment of going into details, but the truth is that I had been living a profane, drunken, self-absorbed, and immoral lifestyle. In my career, I had back stabbed my colleagues to gain a personal advantage and had routinely violated legal and ethical standards in pursuit of stories. In my personal life, I was sacrificing my wife and children on the altar of success. I was a liar, a cheater, and a deceiver. My heart had shrunk to the point where it was rock hard toward anyone else. My main motivator was personal pleasure-and ironically, the more I hungrily sought after it; the more elusive and self-destructive it became. ” When I read in the Bible that these sins separated me from God who is holy and morally pure, this resonated as being true. Certainly God, whose existence I had denied for years, seemed extremely distant, and it became obvious to me that I needed the cross of Jesus to bridge that gulf.”
“It’s based on the “done ” plan-Jesus has done for us on the cross what we cannot do for ourselves: he has paid the death penalty that we deserve for our rebellion and wrongdoing, so we can become reconciled with God.”
On November 8, 1981 acknowledge his sins, repented before Christ and sought His forgiveness, and believed.
“In fact, so radical was the difference in my life that a few months after I became a follower of Jesus, our five-year- old daughter Alison went up to my wife and said, “Mommy, I want God to do for me what he’s done for Daddy.” Here was a little girl who had only known a father who was profane, angry, verbally harsh, and all too often absent. And even though she had never interviewed a scholar, never analyzed the data, never investigated historical evidence, she had “seen up close the, influence that Jesus can have on one person’s life. In effect, she was saying, “If this is what God does to a human being, that’s what I want for me. Looking back nearly two decades, I can personally see with clarity that the day I made a decision in the case for Christ was nothing less than the pivotal event of my entire life.” “Christ stepped in, took the punishment upon himself and bore the judgment due to sinners. With his own blood he expiated the sins which made them enemies of God and thereby satisfied him. Bottom line Christ willing to the cross and sacrifice Himself and took our sins and His Father wrath to bridge the gap between His Father and mankind In short the gospel works !

Soli Deo Gloria

Soli Deo Gloria  is Latin term meaning to give glory to God alone. As follower of Christ we live for the glory of God alone.
The Ten Commandments states Do not have other gods besides Me. Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.
Westminster shorter catechism asks, “What is the chief end of man? Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” Jonathan Edwards wrote, “The happiness of the creature consists in rejoicing in God, by which also God is magnified and exalted.” My Sister Marcia penned these words, “Now I feel have all optimistic full of hope and joy because I know it’s our Lord and Saviour who is the King of heaven and earth, and that He shall reign forever and ever.“

John Piper wrote these words concerning giving God the glory, ” We use the phrase glory of God so often that it tends to lose its biblical force. But this glory, like the sun, is no less blazing— and no less beneficial—because people ignore it. Yet, God hates to be ignored. ” Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!” (Ps. 50:22). So let’s focus again on the glory of God. What is God’s glory, and how important is it?”
The doctrine soli Deo gloria is closely connected to the doctrine of irresistible grace. Since God compels us to repent and confess our sins, and put our trust and faith in Christ atoning work. God stimulated the follower of Christ to worship give Him in music, service, studying His word, and in conversion
Wikipedia wrote, As a doctrine, it means that everything that is done is for God’s glory to the exclusion of mankind’s self-glorification and pride. Christians are to be motivated and inspired by God’s glory and not their own. As scripture declares, “so that no one can boast”
In Apostle John in vision in heaven he saw “the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, / to receive glory and honor and power'” (Revelation 4:10–11)
Music is a gift that came from God is often use for the glory of God, Johann Sebastian Bach beneath all his compositions. Penned the initials SDG, soli Deo gloria. Jonathan Edwards wrote, “The best, most beautiful, and most perfect way that we have of expressing a sweet Concord of mind to each other is by music.”
George Frideric Handel who composes the Messiah in twenty-four days by using the scriptures and the Common Prayer composes it to opera, choral music, along with orchestra,. When he had finished writing what would become known as the Hallelujah Chorus, he said, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God himself.” As scripture declares, Your statutes are the theme of my song during my earthly life.
On March, 23 1743. So moved by Hallelujah chorus King George II stood up at the performance and the entire audience followed. The Christian King of England is not the Supreme Authority, but he is one under authority and must show honor and respect to his Supreme Lord, the King of Kings. Just as people rise to show honor and respect in the presence of their English Royals, King George could do no less, as one under Authority.
Sir John Hawkins wrote, “He [Handel] would frequently declare the pleasure he felt in setting the Scriptures to music, and how contemplating the many sublime passages in the Psalms had contributed to his edification.”
Soli Deo Gloria is using your spiritual gifts honoring God. As the Scripture says, Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God; Whoever speaks, let him speak, as it was, the utterances of God; whoever serves, let him do so as by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to who belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father; to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. To Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Blessing and glory and wisdom and Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. 1CO 10:31; 1PE 4:11; REV 1:6; 2PE 3:1; EPH 3:21; REV 7:12; ROM 11:36)
