Does God Operate Through Dream And Visions
The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. Dreams mainly occur in the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep—when brain activity is high and resembles that of being awake. Continuous movements of the eyes reveal REM sleep during sleep. At times, dreams may occur during other stages of sleep.
Visions are known to emerge from spiritual traditions and could provide a lens into human nature and reality. Prophecy is often associated with visions. For example, St Paul‘s vision of Jesus on the road to Damascus or St Peter seeing unclean beasts
Visions occur frequently in the Bible as instruments of supernatural revelation. They are audiovisual means of communication between a heavenly being and an earthly recipient.
The terms used to designate visions in both Testaments have to do with seeing or perceiving. The Old Testament terms for vision (the Hebrew verbs raa and haza and their several noun derivatives) mean simply to look at or to see. In the New Testament, horao [oJravw] is one of the Greek verbs for see, observe, or perceive, but its related noun (horama [o&rama]) is the common term for “vision.”
And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dreamter dreams.Acts 2:17.
For God speaks time and again, but a person may not notice it. In a dream, a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber on their beds, He uncovers their ears at that time and terrifies them with warnings,Job 33:14-16
Hebrews 1:1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”Matthew 1:20-21.
Matthew 1:19 (BBC): He might have been indignant at his fiancée on two counts: First, her apparent unfaithfulness to him; and second, though innocent, he would almost inevitably be accused of complicity.
Matthew 1:20 (ENTVIIII): If we believe the Jews, this Angel must be Gabriel, since he is the Angel who is appointed over dreams; for he appeared to Joseph in a dream, which is one of the ways and methods in which the Lord, or an Angel of his, has occurred to the Saint s formerly, and has answered them, see Gen. 31:11; 1 Kings 3:5; 1 Sam. 28:6, 15 and is reckoned by the Jews one of the degrees or kinds of prophecy: and so the Angel here not only encourages Joseph to take to him his wife.
Matthew 1:20 (ENTVIIII): she has not been guilty of any criminal conversation with men; this conception of her’s is of the Holy Ghost, and entirely owing to his coming upon her, and overshadowing her in a wonderful and miraculous manner. I say, the Angel not only encourages Joseph after this manner, but delivers something to him by way of prophecy.
in Matthew 1:21,25 In She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” but did not know her intimately until she gave birth to a son. And he named Him Jesus.
And being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their own country by another route. After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.” Matthew 2:12-13
Note being warned in a dream not to go back to Herod and, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream.
Matthew 2:13 (ENTVIIII): The child is also mentioned before the mother, not only because of his divine nature and office, in respect to which he was her God and Saviour; but because it was the preservation of the child that was chiefly regarded, and for which the providence of God was particularly concerned.
Matthew 2:14 (BBC): From infancy the threat of death hung over our Lord. It is apparent that He was born to die, but only at the appointed time. Anyone, who walks in God’s will is immortal until his work is done. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.
There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment. About three in the afternoon he distinctly saw in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, “Cornelius!” Looking intently at him, he became afraid and said, “What is it, lord?” The angel told him, “Your prayers and your acts of charity have come up as a memorial offering before God.Acts 10:1,3-4.
Acts 10:3 (ENTVIIII): He saw in a vision evidently, &c.] He was not in a dream, or in a trance, but he was thoroughly awake, and his eyes open, and was himself; it was not in the night, but in clear day: about the ninth hour of the day; or three o’clock in the afternoon, which was the hour of prayer.
Acts 10:3–8 (BBC): Being a Gentile, he was not as aware of the ministry of angels as a Jew would be, and so he was afraid and mistook the angel for the Lord. The angel spoke reassuringly of God’s appreciation of his prayers and alms.
In Acts 1:8, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth
Note to the ends of the earth, Cornelius was a Gentle and Godly man who prayed faithfully. In Acts 10; 44-47 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded, “Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
The next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop about noon. Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something, he went into a visionary state. He saw heaven opened and an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth. In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat. Acts 10:9-13
Acts 10:10 (ENTVIIII): Peter fell into a trance; or an ecstacy, or an ecstacy fell upon him; it was what was supernatural, and came from above, and did not arise from any natural cause in him; he was as it were out of the body, and entirely in the spirit; all the bodily organs and senses were shut up, but in a visionary way, and which was an emblem of the opening and revealing the mystery of the calling of the Gentiles. In Acts 1:8, Jesus foretold but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth, the ends of the earth was about ready to unravel, and Gentiles, would be filled with Holy Spirit
: Though the blood and righteousness of Christ, and the grace of his spirit, and with respect to its discipline and conversation; and so to a great one for its largeness; for though the number of its members, when compared with the world, are few, yet in themselves are a number which no man can number; and though it was but small at first, yet the Gospel being carried among the Gentiles it increased, and in the last times will be large: knit at the four corners of the world.
In Acts 10;28 Peter said to them, “You know it’s forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner. But God has shown me that I must not call any person common or unclean.
However Moses declared these words. You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22 You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. You shall not oppress a stranger; you know the heart of a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Furthermore he started And when a stranger shall sojourn with you and would keep the passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised, partake in the Passover.but in every nation the person who fears Him and does righteousness is acceptable to Him.
Peter declared the gospel to Cornelius, and his household saying We ourselves are witnesses of everything He did in both the Judean country and in Jerusalem, yet they killed Him by hanging Him on a tree. not by all the people, but by us, witnesses appointed beforehand by God, who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to solemnly testify that He is the One appointed by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about Him that through His name everyone who believes in Him will receive forgiveness of sins.”The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded, “Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days. Acts 10:45-48
During the night a vision appeared to Paul: A Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us! ”Acts 16:9
Acts 1:8 to the ends of the earth now the doors of Europe were opened. Acts 16:9 (BBC): Whether consciously or not, Macedonia (and all Europe!) needed the gospel of redeeming grace. The Lord had been closing doors in Asia so His servants would carry the good news to Europe. Stalker paints the picture:[The man of Macedonia] represented Europe, and his cry for help Europe’s need of Christ. Paul recognized in the vision a divine summons; and the very next sunset which bathed the Hellespont in its gold light shone upon his figure seated on the deck of a ship, the prow of which was moving toward the shore of Macedonia.
Then the Lord said to Paul in a night vision, “Don’t be afraid, but keep on speaking and don’t be silent. 10 For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you because I have many people in this city.
Acts 18:9 (ENTVIIII): the Gentiles were exasperated against the apostle; and his life might seem to be in danger, and he might be thinking of removing from hence for his preservation and safety; and might be advised to it by his friends, or at least that he should be incognito, and not be seen publicly: wherefore the Lord appears to him, and bids him not indulge any fears, or conceal himself and be silent, but speak, and hold not thy peace; preach freely and boldly the Gospel without fear of men; the fear of men should not stop the mouths of Christ’s ministers. As scriptures declares,
Now I urge you to take courage, because there will be no loss of any of your lives, but only of the ship. For this night an angel of the God I belong to and serve stood by me, and said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. And, look! God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.’
As scriptures declares, Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Acts 27:22-24 22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.
23 Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me 24 and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.’
“You men should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete and sustain this damage and loss. .Do not be afraid You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.
Acts 27:24 (ENTVIIII): For though the apostle knew and believed he should go to Rome, and appear before Cæsar, to whom he had appealed, and where he should bear a testimony for Christ; and though he had previous notice of this storm, and of the loss and damage which should he sustained, and which he expected; yet the flesh was weak, and he might be under some fears and misgivings of heart, for these sometimes attend the best of men. Thou must be brought before Cæsar; as has been declared, and therefore can’t be lost in this storm; it is the will and decree of God, which can’t be frustrated.
Paul, that he might summon him to Jerusalem. They were preparing an ambush along the road to kill him.
I appeal to Caesar!” I answered them that it’s not the Romans’ custom to give any man up before the accused confronts the accusers face to face and has an opportunity to give a defense concerning the charges.Acts 25:4,10-11,16 After Festus conferred with his council, he replied, “You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you will go!”Acts 25:12. The following night, the Lord stood by him and said,
In Acts 23:11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Have courage! For as you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”
There we found believers and were invited to stay with them for seven days. And so we came to Rome. Now the believers from there had heard the news about us and had come to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage. When we entered Rome, Paul was permitted to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded
him .Acts 28:14-16
2 Corinthians 12:1-4 Boasting is necessary. It is not profitable, but I will move on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven 14 years ago. Whether he was in the body or out of the body, I don’t know, God knows. I know that this man—whether in the body or out of the body I don’t know, God knows— was caught up into paradise. He heard inexpressible words, which h a man is not allowed to speak.
2 Corinthians 12:1 (ENTVIIII):The date of fourteen years ago, may refer either to the time when the apostle first had the knowledge of his being in Christ, which was at his conversion;this date may refer to the time of his rapture, which some have thought was some time within the three days after his conversion, when he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
The apostle might very well speak of visions, or heavenly appearances, since he was favoured with many; his conversion was owing to a vision or appearance of Christ to him, whom he saw with his bodily eyes, and heard him speaking to him, and which he calls the heavenly vision: at another time when at Troas, a vision appeared to him in the night, and a man of Macedonia stood and prayed him to come over and help them; and when at Corinth the Lord spoke to him by a vision, and bid him not be afraid, but go on preaching the Gospel, and these visions and revelations were for his instruction, direction, and encouragement in the ministration of the Gospel.
I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven, God knows—I was caught up into paradise.
2 Corinthians 12:4 (ENTVIIII): Not the earthly paradise in which our first parents were; this was destroyed by the flood, and the place where it was not now to be known
he was caught up into paradise, he heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter; to instance in particular things, which he then either saw or heard, as some have done, is bold and daring; as that he saw the divine Being with the eyes of his understanding, the several angelic forms, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers, and the glory and beauty of the souls of departed saints; and heard the harmonious music of each of these happy creatures; had a view of the book of life, and was shewn the order and method of divine predestination; was let into the mystery of the calling of the Gentiles, and the change that will be on living saints, and heard the whole account of the dispensation of things, in the church of Christ to the end of the world: the things were unspeakable. He was not able to put into proper words and language to be understood by others; and which as he heard them not from a mere man, but from the Lord,
God relating to man’s salvation, the whole of which he faithfully declares; and yet were necessary to be heard by him, in order to establish his faith in the Gospel, to animate him in his ministry, and fortify his mind against all the afflictions, reproaches, and persecutions, he was to meet with for the sake of Christ.
the present state of things, being no part of the counsel of God relating to man’s salvation, the whole of which he faithfully declares; and yet were necessary to be heard by him, in order to establish his faith in the Gospel, to animate him in his ministry, and fortify his mind against all the afflictions, reproaches, and persecutions. Seeing paradise in vision gave Paul the courage to preach the gospel to Gentiles and hope even difficult circumstances
I knew a women who had eleven children the oldest was a nurse, the next a pastor the other ran a photography business , a sister and her husband operates a farm, yet another was buyer at Sears, a sister teaches violin to under privilege children in her neighbour while other operate interior horticulture, while the was a nurse who work addicts on streets
While expecting their third-youngest and twin brother, she caught pneumonia and put on antibiotics in 1950 they were unaware of side effect for example birth defect. While two children were been delivery one was stillborn the other had speech impediments. When the child handed her he was mess, and she cried however, the Lord reveal her this child play a unique role in her life. Little did she know that he would rebel against her Christian belief. He eventually he became a follower of Christ, accepted he was sinner in need of a Savour.
When husband pass away this child with her until she pass away. Much the theological he come to love and cherish came from her teaching. and being around her shapes his theology.
My point is that visions and dreams from God do not occur every day.
1. For example the Apostle Paul there five visions;
2. a vision appeared to him in the night, and a man of Macedonia stood and prayed him to come over and help them; and when at Corinth
3. the Lord spoke to him by a vision, and bid him not be afraid, but go on preaching the Gospel, and these visions and revelations were for his instruction, direction, and encouragement in the ministration of the Gospel.
4. In Acts 23:11 The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Have courage! For as you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome..
5. I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven 14 years ago. Whether he was in the body or out of the body, I don’t know, God knows. I know that this man—whether in the body or out of the body I don’t know, God knows— was caught up into paradise.
6. When he met Jesus on the Damascus Road.
The Apostle Peter one vision
The Apostle Peter had one vision, coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth. In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky. Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat.
Jesus appear to the Apostle John The revelation of Jesus Christ that God gave Him to show His slaves what must quickly take place. He sent it and signified it through His angel to His slave John, who testified to God’s word and to the testimony about Jesus Christ, in all he saw.Revelation 1:1-2
And I saw lamp stands was One like the Son of Man, dressed in a long robe and with a gold sash wrapped around His chest. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. He laid His right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last, 18 and the Living One. I was dead, but look—I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades. Revelation 1:13,17-18. 19 Therefore write what you have seen, what is, and what will take place after this Revelation 1:19. Later on John saw After this I beheld, and lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations and kindreds and people and tongues, stood before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes and with palms in their hands.
Dreams and Visions from God are meant to inspire and give us the courage to preached the gospel even during difficult times.
Gotta question, With the completion of the Bible, God does not have to use dreams and visions as much as He did before. That is not to say that He cannot or does not; God can communicate with us however He chooses. But when we have a decision to make, our first stop should always be the Bible, not a dream.
And we heard this voice when it came from heaven while we were with Him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:18-21
(BBC): Speaking of James, John, and himself, Peter emphasizes that they distinctly heard the voice of God when they were with the Lord on the holy mountain. Here is the testimony of three witnesses, which according to Matthew 18:16 is authoritative and competent.
2 Peter 1:18 (BBC): We do not know the mountain on which the Transfiguration took place. If it were identifiable, it would probably be littered with shrines by now. It is called the holy mountain not because it was intrinsically sacred but because it was set apart as the site for a sacred event.
2 Peter 1:19 (BBC): And so we have the prophetic word confirmed. The OT prophets had predicted Christ’s coming in power and great glory. The events on the mount of Transfiguration confirmed those prophecies.
2 Peter 1:19 (BBC): F. W. Grant’s translation of the rest of verse 19 is helpful. “… to which ye do well in taking heed (as to a lamp that shineth in an obscure place, until the day dawn and the morning star ariseth) in your hearts.
2 Peter 1:19 (HNTC 1-2 Pe/1-3 Jn): So confident was Peter of the reliability and authority of the Scriptures that he counseled us to use the Scriptures as our guide until the Second Coming of Christ”
